Driver, Hans Herman and navigator, Herbert Linge slip under a railroad crossing boom to avoid losing time waiting on a train. The team began the Mille Miglia (1000 mile) race in Brescia, Italy at 3:51am, as signified by the car’s number, and was soon faced with a lowered railroad crossing boom.
Instead of stopping and giving up all chance at winning, Herman realized the 550 was low enough to slip under the boom before the train came through, provided the two duck their heads. Herman floored it and made it under just before the train came barreling through. Unfortunately the only picture available comes from the mind of the painter.
How close the train actually came to disintegrating Herman, Linge, and the 550 is open to speculation. What is certain is that Herman’s average speed of 80 mph on narrow country roads and 6th place finish is incredible, considering the Porsche’s engine was only 1500 cc in size, less than half the size of many of the cars it beat.
